FUCHS machining oils: Product and application overview
Developing production technologies are forcing manufacturers to make innovative adjustments.
From the user’s perspective, on the other hand, the correct choice of product for specific needs and application conditions is a particular challenge. Most of the challenges of the machining industry are answered by FUCHS products.
What are the benefits of machining measures?
The main task of any product designed for machining operations is to reduce friction between the tool and the material being machined. Such products are also intended to reduce tool wear and ensure the quality of machining operations.
We write more about the main functionalities of machining fluids in the first article of this series (link to https://beztarcia.fuchs.com/przemysl/srodki-do-obrobki-skrawaniem-podstawy-doboru-parametry-zastosowanie/). If you are interested, we invite you to read on!
Machining oils
For standard machining operations such as turning, milling and grinding, conventional fluids will work well. As a rule, they are designed for contact with steel, aluminium and non-ferrous alloys.
- ECOCUT 3010. a typical low-vapour oil with a kinematic viscosity of 11 mm²/s at 40°C. The product is suitable for all cutting operations and especially for turning and grinding operations on ordinary and low-alloy steels, cast iron, bronze, brass and other non-ferrous metals.
- ECOCUT 3022. has the properties of ECOCUT 3010, but in addition has a higher kinematic viscosity at 40°C (22 mm²/s). It can also be used for general lubrication as a circulating or hydraulic oil with the appropriate viscosity.
- ECOCUT 3032. has an even higher kinematic viscosity at 40°C of 32 mm²/s as well as a flash point (at 210°C). It can also be used for general lubrication as a circulating or hydraulic oil with the appropriate viscosity.
All of the above products, contain no harmful chlorine, zinc or heavy metal compounds and are almost odourless.
Low carbon multi-prupose machining oils
ECOCUT’s HFN LE series products are used for machining all carbon and low-alloy steels, automatic steels, cast iron, bronze, brass and other non-ferrous metals.
They are characterised by reduced oil mist emissions, long service life and good anti-corrosion properties. They can be used as HLP spindle or hydraulic oils in applications where the appropriate viscosity grade is recommended. They are particularly recommended for automatic turning and grinding machines.
Their strengths are the EP and AW type additives, which increase the strength of the lubricating film, which is important for mechanical machining loads.
- ECOCUT HFN 5 LE. Multifunctional mineral oil based oil for honing, lapping and grinding, as well as for all machining operations where low viscosity oils are required. It is characterised by low oil mist emissions, long service life and good anti-corrosion properties. Suitable for working with materials such as steel, cast iron, aluminium, copper and its alloys, magnesium and high speed steel (HSS). It is characterised by low evaporation.
- ECOCUT HFN 10 LE. Equally multifunctional oil, designed for the same materials. Works well in the context of drilling, grinding, smoothing, gear milling and bearing machining. Particularly suitable for grinding crankshafts using CBN boron grinding wheels. Compared to ECOCUT HFN 5 LE oil, it has a higher flash point and kinematic viscosity at 40°C.
- ECOCUT HFN 13 LE UNI. Universal and recommended by leading grinder manufacturers for machining and gear grinding. Ideal for working with ordinary and high-speed steel (HSS), aluminium and non-ferrous metals.
- ECOCUT HFN 16 LE. Multifunctional agent, used for machining. Non-reactive with copper and based on mineral oil, low-fog mineral oil, with low oil mist and evaporation. Suitable for cutting for grinding and machining operations, especially for drilling, gear milling, etc. It has a fairly high flash point (194°C). Works with materials such as steel, cast iron, aluminium, copper and its alloys, HSS steel, magnesium.
- ECOCUT HFN 22 LE. Has similar properties to the ECOCUT HFN 16 LE. In addition, it has a higher flash point, higher kinematic viscosity at 40°C.
- ECOCUT HFN 32 LE. A product similar in properties and purpose to ECOCUT HFN 16 LE and HFN 22 LE, with a relatively high (30 mm²/s) kinematic viscosity at 40°C. It can also be used for hydraulic or general lubrication systems where HLP 32 oils are recommended.
Oils for heavy-duty operations and difficult-to-clean materials
Sometimes the oil has to work under very demanding conditions, with higher temperatures in the cutting zone and high surface pressures. For such special applications and for machining difficult-to-cut steels, we recommend products with chemically active EP additives that significantly increase lubricating properties under high loads and temperatures.
Examples of products that meet these requirements are listed below.
- ECOCUT 615 A. An oil designed primarily for deep-hole drilling operations. However, it works well for most machining operations in alloy steels. Special additives reduce friction and increase tool life. The product is chlorine and zinc free and has low evaporation.
- ECOCUT 628 LE. A product suitable for the machining of alloyed steels, with reduced oil mist emissions, containing anti-friction and anti-wear additives, resulting in increased tool life. Suitable for processes such as deep drilling, broaching, milling, thread cutting or gear finishing.
- ECOCUT 710 LE. This is a high-performance product with a high content of EP additives and suitable for high-alloy steels (Cr-Ni) in gear machining, in operations such as milling, broaching and deep drilling. It has low evaporation and is chlorine and zinc free.
- ECOCUT 715 LE. Has similar characteristics and purpose to ECOCUT 710 LE. However, it has a relatively higher flash point, increased kinematic viscosity at 40°C than its counterpart.
- ECOCUT 720 LE. The product is suitable for operations such as broaching and deep hole drilling. Recommended for operations on difficult and extremely difficult materials.
- ECOCUT 8532. mineral oil and ester based oil for the most demanding machining operations and for work on high alloy steels (including stainless steel). Excellent especially for vertical and horizontal broaching of gear teeth and wedge grooves.
Special grinding and honing (smoothing) oils
The purpose of machining fluids used in grinding is to dissipate heat, lubricate and wash the grinding wheel well. It is good if such products also feature sedimentation properties. Low-viscosity oils with specially selected additives are particularly suitable for these applications. For grinding and other finishing applications, we recommend:
- ECOCUT HON 15 PL. A high-performance oil with reduced oil mist, suitable for honing cast iron parts and all other operations requiring a low-viscosity oil. Works well for working with non-ferrous metals.
- ECOCUT 3005. A group 3000 product, recommended for machining all carbon and low alloy steels, free machining steel, cast iron, bronze, brass and other non-ferrous metals. For use as a spindle oil in applications where the appropriate viscosity grade is recommended.
- STRATUS 108 HC. A colourless machining fluid with high stability designed for honing, grinding and belt polishing and machining of low alloy steel, copper and aluminium. The product is suitable for sharpening carbide tools. Reduces oil mist formation.
- ECOCUT 7 WS. This is an odourless, low-viscosity oil for grinding and sharpening carbides using diamond grinding wheels and HSS steel using CBN and ceramic wheels. It can also be used for honing operations and other machining operations on steel and non-ferrous metals.
- ECOCUT HS. A low-viscosity synthetic oil developed for carbide and HSS grinding and honing operations. It can also be used for high speed grinding operations on all types of steel.
EDM oils
The oil used in machine tools designed for electrical discharge machining (EDM) is responsible for cooling the heated material and removing chips from the sparking area.
ECOCUT 1520 will be a particularly recommended product for such applications and can also be used in finishing, including roughing. It is also suitable for cold surface degreasing.
Mist lubrication oils (MQL)
One of the more modern methods of material processing is oil mist lubrication (MQL). For these applications, we recommend products from the ECOCUT MIKRO and PLANTO MIKRO ranges based on ester oils or fatty alcohols. They provide good lubrication, spray superbly and are safe to use. More information on products for this type of application can be found in the article
